Why You’ll Love These Cinnamon Rolls

  • Fluffy – If there’s a universal agreement, it’s that cinnamon rolls should be fluffy. These vegan cinnamon rolls are soft and fluffy and have the perfect balance of what you are looking for
  • Simple Ingredient List – almost everything in this recipe is a pantry staple which means you usually have everything on hand already!
  • Allergen-Friendly – this recipe is easily top allergen free except for gluten; however, you can follow our vegan gluten free cinnamon roll and use this strawberry-cinnamon filling inside
vegan strawberry cinnamon rolls ingredients.

Vegan Strawberry Cinnamon Rolls Ingredients:

Gather your ingredients!

  • bread flour – we really recommend using bread flour for this recipe for the softness and best cinnamon rolls. Bread flour has a higher protein content which leads to the best dough texture every time for this recipe
  • vegan sugar – Cane sugar is what we are using. Learn more about why your sugar may not be vegan.
  • yeast -we are using instant yeast so that the recipe is as foolproof as possible
  • salt – do not omit here, the salt helps to tighten the gluten strains, but also to bring the flavor out
  • cornstarch – helps to thicken our filling mixture so the natural juices of the strawberries don’t spill out everywhere
  • strawberries – Fresh strawberries will work best.

See my recipe card below for a complete list of the ingredients with measurements.

Substitutions and Variations:

  • bread flour – all-purpose flour could also be used.
  • yeast – you can use active dry yeast but it may take longer to rise
  • sugar – granulated coconut sugar or date sugar could be used
  • strawberries – other berries like raspberries, blueberries, or a mix of berries could also be used. Frozen strawberries can be used, but you’ll want to make sure the juices soak up during the thickening process
  • cornstarch – arrowroot powder is a sub for cornstarch

Step by Step Instructions:

dry ingredients in a bowl and then wet ingredients added into the bowl after whisking.

Step 1: Add all the dry ingredients into a large bowl and whisk together. We prefer to do this in a stand mixer, but this can be done by hand.

Step 2: Add your wet ingredients into the bowl and let your stand mixer knead for 5-7 minutes.

Whether you do this in a stand mixer or by hand, you are looking for a ball to form and the dough to be pulling away from the sides of the bowl.

When you touch the dough with a clean finger, it should not be sticky. You may need to add the additional flour at this time.

newly rolled dough in a silver bowl next to a bowl of risen dough double the size.

Step 3: Once you have your dough ball formed, you are going to remove the dough, grease the bowl, and then cover it with a towel to rise.

Tip: Rising time should take approximately 60-90 minutes to double in size, but you want to watch your dough and not the timer.

Step 4: Once your dough has doubled in size, then you can move on with the recipe.

process of making strawberry filling, get strawberries to release juice, add cornstarch, then cinnamon and get thickened.

Step 5: For the filling, this can be done while waiting for dough to rise. Add your fresh, diced strawberries to a pot and let cook until the juices begin to release, stirring often

Step 6: Add in sugar and cornstarch and stir together vigorously. Allow the mixture to thicken. Then, remove from heat.

Step 7: Add in the cinnamon and stir together.

Step 8: Once you have a thickened mixture, remove it to a bowl and allow to cool completely before moving on.

rolled out dough, then filling spread, strips cut and rolled, and then uncooked cinnamon rolls placed inside a 9x13 baking dish.

Step 9: On a silicon mat, or lightly floured surface, roll your dough out into a rectangle.

Step 10: Carefully spread your cooled filling mixture across, leaving about a 1″ boarder around.

Step 11: Using a pizza cutter, slice dough into 12 equal pieces. Then roll up from bottom to top each piece.

You could also do the traditional method of rolling the entire log and then cutting pieces.

Step 12: Place each piece in a parchment and lightly greased 9×13 baking dish. Once all pieces are in your dish, cover and let rise again until double. Cinnamon rolls should be touching.

risen but uncooked cinnamon rolls next to a tray of cooked but unfrosted cinnamon rolls.

Step 13: Once all the cinnamon rolls have risen and mostly touching all sides, then you bake your cinnamon rolls for 30-35 minutes

Step 14: When your cinnamon rolls have finished cooking, remove from the oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before adding any frosting.

Recipe FAQs:

Can I prep these ahead of time?

Yes!  You sure can!  There are two options:
Once you make the dough and cover it to rise, you can place the bowl in the fridge up to 2 days before you plan to use it.
You can make the entire recipe and then store your cinnamon rolls in an air tight container in the fridge for 5 days.

Can I make these top 8 allergen free?

You can use our vegan gluten free cinnamon rolls recipe, and just add this filling instead.
Otherwise, as long as you use a safe dairy free milk, (Oat is our favorite) and a soy free butter (try Earth Balance soy free for example) then you will be all set.

Do I have to use a stand mixer?

No, but you will have to knead by hand for approximately 9-12 minutes at the step where it says “allow stand mixer to go for 5-7 minutes”. You are looking for the same texture – not sticky. It’s easy to over flour when kneading by hand, so make sure not to add more than recommended.

Cuisine American
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Rise Time x2 1 hour 30 minutes
Total Time 2 hours 10 minutes
Servings 12 cinnamon rolls
Calories 386kcal

Equipment

  • 1 9×13 pan

Ingredients

For the Dough

For the Filling

  • 1 ¾ cup fresh strawberries, diced small (220g)
  • ¼ cup vegan cane sugar (50g)
  • 1 ½ tablespoon cornstarch (can sub arrowroot powder)
  • 2 teaspoon cinnamon

Lemon Glaze

Instructions

For the dough

  • In a large stand mixer bowl, whisk together 5 cups of bread flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  • Then, add in the vegan butter and dairy free milk. Turn stand mixer onto low and let go for 5-7 minutes, adding in the remaining flour if needed to not be sticky and form a ball.
  • Once ball is formed, grease the same bowl mixed in and place the dough ball back into the bowl.
  • Cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let sit for 60-90 minutes in a warm, draft free place until doubled.

For the filling

  • In a small saucepan, over medium low heat, add strawberries and stir constantly for 4 minutes until the strawberries begin to release juices. Add the granulated sugar and cornstarch and continue to stir for another 2 minutes. The mixture will thicken. Remove from the heat, stir in the cinnamon, and then pour into a heatproof bowl or container, and chill until ready to use. You do not want a warm filling as you spread it onto the dough.
  • Once dough has doubled in size, pull out the dough and lay it out on a lightly floured surface.  Using a rolling pin, roll dough into an approximately 12×24″ rectangle that is ¼″ thick.  Spread the cooled filling mixture evenly across dough.
  • Carefully roll into a log from the longest side up. One completely rolled, place seam side down. Cut into 12 even sized pieces.
  • Place into a greased 9×13 baking dish and cover. Cover and let rise again for 45-60 minutes or until touching.
  • Preheat to 350 degrees F.
  • Once heated, place dish back inside and bake in oven for 30-35 minutes.

For the Glaze

  • While rolls are cooking, whisk together the powdered sugar and lemon juice until well combined.
  • Remove cinnamon rolls from oven and let cool for 10 minutes. Then top with homemade glaze. Best served warm.

It’s no secret that cake is the way to many hearts. Not only is our vegan chocolate cake consistently a hit, even with non-vegans, but our vegan coffee cake is as well.

So then we had this epic idea to combine both of these favorites together and hence you now have this recipe for a grandiose vegan chocolate coffee cake.

What is Coffee Cake?

Coffee cake around the world usually means that there is literally coffee inside the cake; however, for us in the United States, the taste and texture really refer more to something that is meant to be served with coffee (or tea).

Why you’ll love chocolate coffee cake

  • New Spin on a Classic – having more options is always a good thing and you’ll love that you have a new version of coffee cake (or just cake) that you’ll love
  • Soft & Moist – We all want cake that is soft with each bit but is also moist and you’ll get that each and every time you make this
  • Crumble Topping – the hold crumble topping has on cake is out of this world. It just elevates any cake to a new level
  • Allergy-Friendly – since this is a vegan chocolate coffee cake, it’s already dairy and egg free, but it can also be made totally 100% allergen-friendly, which means no nuts, gluten, or soy as well
ingredients for vegan chocolate coffee cake.

Vegan Chocolate Coffee Cake Ingredients:

Gather your ingredients!

  • Flour – you’ll want to use all-purpose flour for this recipe to ensure ultimate taste and texture
  • Vegan butter – when baking, we prefer to use vegan butter sticks versus tubs
  • Espresso Powder – while this is optional, we highly recommend because espresso actually brings out the flavor of chocolate more. Bonus is that it aligns more of that coffee flavor that other countries us
  • Vegan Sugar – you’ll want to use an organic or bone-char free sugar to ensure it’s vegan. Learn what is vegan sugar
  • Vegan Chocolate Chips – dairy free chocolate chips contain no dairy or other animal ingredients
  • Applesauce – we use unsweetened applesauce to replace the eggs in this cake
  • Vinegar – When vinegar is combined with non-dairy milk, it helps create a vegan buttermilk. We prefer using apple cider vinegar

See my recipe card below for a complete list of the ingredients with measurements.

Substitutions and variations:

  • Flour – a gluten free all-purpose flour 1:1 blend can also be used
  • Espresso Powder – Regular or decaf coffee could be used
  • Applesauce substitutions for applesauce would be the same amount of coconut cream, pureed banana (will change taste), pumpkin or sweet potato puree, or non-dairy yogurt.
  • Vinegar – white vinegar or lemon juice could also be used

Step by Step Instructions:

ingredients for filling unmixed then whisked together.

Step 1 and 2: Add your filling ingredients together in a small bowl and then whisk them together.

mixing together the chocolate crumble topping in four parts.

Step 3 and 4: Add your dry ingredients for your crumble into a bowl and whisk together.

Step 5 and 6: Add your vanilla and cubed vegan butter. Then, work in the butter until a crumble forms. It should like similar to a sand like texture.

making the vegan chocolate coffee cake batter in 4 parts.

Step 7: Add your dry ingredients for the cake batter into a large bowl and whisk together. Then add the vegan butter cubes and form a sand like texture.

Step 8 and 9: Add in applesauce and vanilla and and combine. This will be a very thick mixture.

Step 10: Add non-dairy chocolate milk and vinegar into bowl and mix until uniform batter achieved, careful not to overmix.

layering the cake in steps, batter then chips, then rest of batter then crumble

Step 11: Add half the cake batter to a greased and parchment lined 9″ cake pan.

Step 12: Sprinkle evenly the filling across and top with the chocolate chips.

Step 13: Add remaining half of the cake batter and carefully spread to all side. It’s okay if some of the filling come up, but try not to do much.

Step 14: Top with the crumble topping and then bake.

Recipe FAQs:

Can I make this oil free?

We have not tried, but this is what we would recommend. Swapping the butter in the cake for more applesauce (another ½ cup). This will make the cake more dense though. For the crumble topping we’d recommend all maple syrup or 3 tablespoon maple syrup and 3 tablespoon nut butter.

Can I make Top 8 Allergen Free?

Yes. Use gluten free flour (will make more dense), a soy free non-dairy butter, and a safe for you non-dairy chocolate milk (like oat chocolate). If you make those swaps this can be completely top 8 allergen free.

Can I prep this cake ahead?

Yes! This cake can be made 3-5 days in advance. For best results, if serving others we’d recommend only making a day or two in advance.

How do you store coffee cake?

We recommend leaving this cake out at room temperature, but covered in an air tight container like a cake stand with a dome cover.

Ingredients

For the Filling

For the Crumble Topping

For the Cake

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease lightly a 9" round cake pan and line with a round piece of parchment paper

For the filling

  • Add the sugar and cocoa powder to a small bowl and whisk together. Set aside along with the chocolate chips.

For the crumble topping

  • In a bowl, whisk the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, and salt. Add cubed butter and vanilla. Use a fork to gently cover all the butter and then, work butter into mixture until a sand like texture forms. Stir in ¼ cup chocolate chips. Set aside.

For the cake

  • In a large bowl, add the flour through the espresso powder (if adding). Whisk to combine. Add in the cubed vegan butter and using a mixer, mix for 2 minutes until a sand like texture forms.
  • Add applesauce and vanilla and beat until a thick mixture forms. Add in chocolate milk and vinegar and mix until a smooth consistency. Careful not to overmix.

Assembling

  • Pour half the batter into the prepared cake pan and spread out to the edges. Sprinkle the filling evenly over the batter, then the reserved ¼ cup chocolate chips.
  • Pour remaining batter and carefully spread to the edges. Okay if a little filling gets mixed in. Tip: We find that dollaping the remaining mix helps here instead of pouring all the the center.
  • Sprinkle crumble topping all over the batter.
  • Bake for 45-55 minutes. A toothpick should come out mostly clean. Remove and allow to sit for 20 minutes before cutting to allow the cake to set.
  • Store at room temperature. Can be frozen.

Tips on how to make the best Vegan Red Velvet Cookies recipe:

Here’s some easy tips on making the best vegan red velvet chocolate chip cookies recipe:

  • Preheat the oven before you making your dough and let it preheat for at least 30 minutes.
  • Use a cookie scoop to ensure uniform size of cookies so they bake at an even temperature.
  • Don’t make substitutions unless you are aware of the changes it will make to your cookies
  • Watch your cookies in the oven as all oven temperatures are different you may need to pull out your cookies earlier or leave longer

Vegan Red Velvet Cookies INGREDIENTS:

Below are notes about the main ingredients before we get into the full recipe located lower in this post on how to make this easy vegan dessert recipe:

  • Flour – We are using all purpose flour for this recipe.
  • Cocoa Powder – Red Velvet classic taste comes from the addition of cocoa powder, so we are using that in these as well
  • Flax Egg – Our egg replacer of choice here. It’s simple to use and works perfectly while being neutral in flavor.
  • Vegan Butter –  we need oil in cookies for moisture and the best texture. It also provides the richness we expect cookies to have
  • Brown and Cane Sugar – We are using both brown and cane sugar. Obviously it’s about sweetening, but the amount of brown sugar we are adding here also helps with the softness of the cookies thanks to the presence of molasses. If you want to learn more about why your sugar may not be vegan, you can learn more by clicking on the link.
  • Baking Powder and Soda– helps again with the softness and helping us get that thick texture
  • Vegan White Chocolate Chips – We are using white vegan chips that you can now easily find. The Great Value Top 8 Free white chips are what we are using here as they are vegan friendly. Enjoy Life and Pascha are other brands.
  • Red Food Dye– What we are using to get the iconic red color

SUBSTITUTIONS AND VARIATIONS:

  • Flours – You could also do gluten free 1:1 flour blend like King Arthur or Bob’s.
  • Flax Egg – You can sub with ½ cup applesauce. That would be our first preference, but you could also sub the same amount of banana, pumpkin or sweet potato puree, or non-dairy yogurt. Some of these may alter taste and texture.
  • Brown and Cane Sugar – You can try coconut or date granulated sugars, but we have not tested these.
  • Vegan Chocolate Chips – Try vegan semi-sweet chips or dark chocolate or a combination of them all for a different taste
  • Red Food Dye – You could try beet powder for this, but we have not tested to see the color difference

Frequently Asked Questions on how to make the best Vegan Red Velvet Cookies:

Can I make these Top 8 Allergen Free?

Whether you have a gluten allergy or dairy or another Top 8, you will be happy to know that you can make these completely free of top allergens.

For the vegan butter, we would recommend using a soy free vegan butter, like Earth Balance soy free in the red tub

Can I make any substitutions?

Besides the substitutions above for making Top 8 Allergen free, we are frequently asked if you can make them without vegan butter or swap out the sugar for a healthy sugar source.

The answer is yes, but. Yes, you can, but the taste and texture is obviously going to differ once you start making any changes.

For the butter you could make these Vegan Cookies with applesauce by replacing in the same amount.

For the sugar, we would recommend just replacing with a coconut sugar versus something else.

Can I prep these ahead?

Yes! Let cool completely and then leave in an air tight container on the counter for up to 5 days.

Can I freeze the dough?

Of course. Whether you want to eat the entire batch at one time or you just need a couple here and there, you can totally roll out what you need and then freeze the remaining batter in an air tight freezer container or bag

Can I refrigerate the dough until ready to use?

Absolutely! Make the dough ahead, cover the bowl and place in the fridge up to a week.

It does take very chilled cookies longer to cook so check after the recommended baking time and you may need an additional few minutes to finish your cookies.

What is vegan sugar?

In the United States, most sugar has been processed through bone char. While there are no animal parts left in the sugar, many vegans are not okay with the practice of using animal parts in the refining process.

This refers to white sugar, brown sugar, and powdered sugar.

One easy way to ensure that your sugar has not been processed with bone char is to look for Organic or Non-Gmo sugars as bone char is not allowed with either of these.

Some sugar packages also say bone char free.

This is not the case in most other countries.

Can I eat this cookie dough?

Many people believe that since there’s no eggs in the dough, that they could just eat the dough; however, flour is actually more a risk for salmonella poisoning than eggs.

For that reason, we do not recommend eating this dough.

However, we do have an edible vegan chocolate chip cookie dough that you can eat. As well as a gluten free edible vegan chocolate chip cookie dough.

Are chocolate chips vegan?

Traditionally, milk chocolate chips are not vegan; however, many dark chocolate chips can be vegan.

The main ingredient that makes a cookie not vegan is either milk or whey (whey powder). If those ingredients are not included in the ingredient list, then the chocolate chips are likely vegan.

You could also make your own vegan chocolate chips by following a homemade chocolate recipe and then piping chips instead.

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups non dairy milk warm (NOT HOT!)

For the Vegan Cream Cheese Frosting

Instructions

  • In a large bowl or a stand mixer, combine 3 ½ cups flour, sugar, cocoa powder, yeast, and salt.
  • Turn stand mixer onto low and add in the non dairy milk, vanilla, and food coloring.
  • Add in the vegan butter and let go for 5-7 minutes, adding in the remaining flour if needed to not be sticky and form a ball.
  • Once ball is formed, grease the same bowl mixed in and place the dough ball back into the bowl.
  • Cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let sit for 60-90 minutes in a warm, draft free place until doubled.
  • Once dough is doubled in size, pull out the dough and lay it out on a lightly floured surface.
  • Using a rolling pin, roll dough into an approximately 17×25″ rectangle that is ¼″ thick.
  • For the filling – in a bowl, cream the butter. Then, add brown sugar and cinnamon. Mix until a well combined paste forms. Spread the filling mixture evenly over the dough.
  • Carefully roll cinnamon rolls into log from the longest side up. One completely rolled, place seam side down. Cut into 12 even sized pieces.

For the Vegan Cream Cheese Frosting

  • While rolls are cooking, in a large bowl cream together vegan cream cheese and vegan butter.

  • Remove rolls from oven and let cool for 10 minutes before topping with frosting.
  • Best served warm.

A spoonful of sugar.

What about vegan sugar?

Many do not know but often times cane sugar in processed through animal bone char. This means that remnants of animal bones are left behind in the sugar that we consume.

While many companies are moving away from this manufacturing process, unless a product is certified vegan or organic, then it is highly likely the the contents contain sugar processed through bone char.

Depending on the level of veganism you are at, you may or may not be okay with this.

On one hand, we know some vegans that say absolutely not and on the other hand we know vegans that say that the trace amounts are not something that they are worried about.

We have not verified with each company at this time about who does or does not process their candy through bone char, so if this is a concern for you, then we highly recommend that you reach out to the manufacturer yourself.

Palm Oil

We know that some vegans are against the use of palm oil due to the destruction of orangutan habitats.

Some of the products below do contain palm oil, but we have included them in the list because palm oil itself is considered vegan.

If palm oil is a concern to you, check the ingredients before purchasing.

Dairy and Egg Allergies

If you have a dairy or egg allergy, vegan candies are perfect because they natural do not contain these ingredients.

Please always double check the packages for cross contamination warnings depending on the severity of your allergen.

You’ll need:

a batch of dairy free sugar cookies shaped like snowflakes.

How do I make dairy free sugar cookies?

Cut out sugar cookies are notoriously known for being a touch finicky; however, if you follow these instructions, then you’ll be on your way to delicious vegan sugar cookies in no time.

To start, you’ll want to beat your vegan butter until it’s really creamy. Then, you’ll add in both sugars and cream together again until very well incorporated.

Next, add in the milk, arrowroot powder, and both extracts. Beat again.

Sift in 1 cup of the flour, baking powder and salt and beat once again. Finally, sift in the rest of the flour and mix just until incorporated.

Do not over mix.

Form a large ball. Break dough into half. Lay a piece of parchment paper down on a cookie sheet that is large enough to fit into your fridge.

Sprinkle a bit of flour and place one of the halves on top. Sprinkle a little more flour on top and then place another piece of parchment paper on top.

Using a rolling pin, roll out dough to ¼ inch thick. Repeat with remaining dough. Stack both pieces inside their parchment paper and place in fridge for a minimum of one hour.

We prefer to leave it in for 4-6 hours. Alternatively, you can leave this in overnight and make the next day.

Remove from fridge and let sit out for 5 minutes. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Remove the top layer of parchment paper and use cookie cutters to make shapes.  Place on parchment lined cookie sheet.

Get as many cut outs as you can and then shape dough back into a ball, roll out to ¼″ thick and repeat until no dough remains.

Cook these dairy free sugar cookies in a preheated oven for 8-10 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool to touch on the cookie sheet.

Then, remove to a cookie rack to cool completely before icing or decorating the cookies in any way.

Decorate, eat, and enjoy!

How do I make these Top 8 Allergen Free cookies?

These dairy free sugar cookies are already vegan sugar cookies also, which means there’s no eggs. Naturally, there’s not fish or shellfish, and there’s also no peanuts involved.

In order to make these dairy free sugar cookies completely Top 8 free, you can swap the flour for Cup 4 Cup Gluten Free Flour to eliminate wheat/gluten allergies.

Then, you’ll want to use all vanilla extract to replace the almond extract. You’ll also want to use an alternative non-dairy milk in place of the almond milk we used.  Ensure it’s unsweetened for these dairy free sugar cookies.

Lastly, we also use Earth Balance soy free butter in our recipes, so you’ll want to make sure you also do that to make these cookies soy free as well.

Additionally, since we use arrowroot powder, instead of cornstarch in these dairy free sugar cookies, these cookies are also corn free.

As always, double check the ingredients you are using to make sure that they don’t contain the allergens.

How do I make sure my dairy free sugar cookies don’t burn?

The biggest tip when make cut out dairy free sugar cookies is to ensure that all the cookies are roughly the same size when baking in the oven. For example, you shouldn’t try to bake a 1″ cookie with a 5″ cookie on the same tray. Try to make sure they are within the same range, give or take ½″ or so.

snowflake cut out Dairy Free sugar cookies.

If you want different sizes, it’s best to make different batches of them and only put similar sized dairy free sugar cookies together on the same baking sheet.

The second tip is to ensure your cookie dough isn’t rolled out thinner than ¼″. The thinner you make then, the more likely they are to burn along the edge. Use a ruler if necessary.

How do I make my vegan sugar cookies crunchy?

Now, sometimes people prefer their cookies have a slight crunch to them. If this is you, then you will want to cook them a little longer. Another option you could do for crunchy dairy free sugar cookies is to make them slightly thinner than ¼″ and reduce the cooking time to 6 minutes.

How do I make my vegan sugar cookies chewy?

On the other hand, some people want their dairy free sugar cookies more on the chewy side. If your preference is to have your vegan sugar cookies this way, then you will want to cooked them a little shorter. Start by reducing time by 2 minutes and then watch them.  As soon as they get any golden brown, you can remove them from the oven.

The other option would be to make the dairy free cookies slightly thicker than ¼″.

How do you make Dairy Free Red Velvet Cupcakes?

These dye free, dairy free red velvet cupcakes are super easy to make.  They only need one bowl to make the entire recipe which is #winning when it comes to doing the dishes later.  To start making this recipe you are going to add the sugar with all the liquid ingredients.  Beat with a mixer very well.  After the liquid ingredients are blended well, then you are going to add all the dry ingredients.  You should have red batter at the time this is done.  If you would like the red a little more intense for your dairy free red velvet cupcakes, then you can a little more beet juice, not to exceed an additional ¼ cup.

*Please note that this will not be as intense of a red as you may be used to since natural dyes are not the same as artificial.

Let your mixture sit for 5 minutes.  During that time, either grease your cupcake pans or add in paper cupcake holders. The batter will make 12 dairy free red velvet cupcakes.  Pour the batter into each cupcake holder until it is approximately ¾ of the way full.  Place baking sheet into a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 17-20 minutes.  A toothpick inserted into the middle should come out clean when done.

Once the cupcakes are done, let cool completely before putting cream cheese or other frosting on top.

It’s also a vegan cheesecake, so that means not only is it dairy free, but it’s also completely egg free as well. It can be made gluten free if that is a dietary concern as well.

Watch how to make a dairy free cheesecake?

What ingredients do you need to make a dairy free cheesecake?

What if I told you that you only need 10 ingredients to make the most delicious dairy free cheesecake recipe. It’s true.  To make this vegan cheesecake recipe, the ingredients that you need are:

  • Raw cashews
  • Vegan Cream cheese
  • Sugar (vegan if necessary)
  • Plain Dairy-Free Yogurt
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Lemon Extract
  • Arrowroot Powder (or Cornstarch)
  • Vegan Butter
  • Brown Sugar
  • Graham Crackers (Gluten Free if needed)
a hand removing a slice of dairy free cheesecake.

How do you make a dairy free cheesecake?

The first step in making a dairy free cheesecake is soaking your cashews. You’ll want to soak them for 4-6 hours or overnight. If you need to speed this process up you can place cashews in boiling water, turn off heat and cover for 30-60 minutes. Drain when finished soaking.

While your cashews are soaking, you’ll want to make your dairy free cheesecake crust. Place 15 graham crackers (a little less than 2 sleeves) in a sealable bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Once they are all crumbled evenly and finely, place them in a bowl with melted butter and brown sugar. Stir until all the crumbs have soaked up the butter and are one consistency.  Using the back of a spoon, start at the middle of a 9″ springform pan and work your way to the edges until you have one even layer. Bake for 15 minutes at 350 degrees.  Remove from oven and set aside to cool.

Side of a golden brown dairy free cheesecake.

Now, it’s time to make your dairy free cheesecake filling.

In a blender, combine the cashews and yogurt until well blended.  A high powered blender works best. Next, beat the cream cheese on low until nice and fluffy. Add the cashew mixture to the beaten cream cheese and mix until combined. Add in the sugar, vanilla extract, lemon extract, and cornstarch.

Once the ingredients are well combined, add it to the cooled crust. Evenly spread out the mixture and then tap the pan to remove any air bubbles. Place in a pre-heated 350 degree oven for 55-60 minutes. The center should be slightly jiggly looking, but not completely set.

Do not open the oven, but turn off the heat and let remain in the oven for 60 minutes. Then, remove the pan to a cookie sheet. Carefully, take a butter knife around the outside edge of the dairy free cheesecake. Let cool completely. Once cooled, place into a fridge for 4-6 hours or overnight.

Right before serving, place any desired topping on it and serve!  Store any leftovers inside an air tighter container.

What topping can I use on a dairy free cheesecake?

When it comes to cheesecake, the toppings are endless. When you make a dairy free cheesecake, that statement remains true.  There are literally so many topping ideas that you can do. Eight dairy free cheesecake toppings that we like are:

  • Classic Cherry
    • Place cherry pie filling on top of dairy free cheesecake
  • Strawberries and Cream
    • Put Dairy Free Whipped Cream around the edge of the dairy free cheesecake and place sliced strawberries in the middle
  • Salted Caramel
    • Drizzle dairy free caramel across the entire dairy free cheesecake and then top lightly with course salt
  • Chocolate Frosting with Chocolate Chunks
    • Warm up dairy free chocolate free to make pourable and then drizzle across entire dairy free cheesecake. Top with dairy free chocolate pieces or chocolate chips
  • Confetti
    • Place desired colored sprinkles on top of dairy free cheesecake. December Holidays: Use red, green and white for Christmas. Blue and white for Hanukkah. Red, Green, and Black for Kwanzaa. Other Ideas: Red and pink for Valentine’s Day. Green for St Patricks Day. Red, white, and blue for Fourth of July. Or Rainbow Sprinkles for a birthday celebration.
  • Blueberry and Lemon
    • Make this Blueberry Syrup recipe and then pour over the dairy free cheesecake.  Top with fresh lemon zest
  • Raspberry Sauce & Powdered Sugar
    • Make raspberry sauce by combining 2 cups frozen raspberries, ⅛ cup sugar, and 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice in a sauce pan over medium low heat until raspberries start to break down. About 5-7 minutes. Strain the sauce to remove seeds if desired. Pour the sauce over the dairy free cheesecake and top with powdered sugar right before serving.
  • Pecans and Brown Sugar

      • Turn off the heat (DO NOT OPEN THE OVEN) and let cheesecake set inside of the oven for one hour.
      • Remove the cheesecake and set on a cookie sheet. Very carefully take a butterknife and run along the edge of the cheesecake.
      • Let set until completely cooled.
      • Place cheesecake in refrigerator for 4-6 hours, or overnight.
      • Add any optional toppings before serving. Keep remaining cheesecake in fridge in covered container for up to 1 week.
